Common Problems That Arise Due To Vitamin B12 Deficiency


Vitamin B12 is an essential requirement of the human body and needs to be taken in adequate amounts. Its deficiency can cause serious issues because vitamin B12 is responsible for the maturation of red blood cells and in the transmission of nerve impulses. Vitamin B12 is stored in the liver in the human body and is utilized when the intake is low. However, consumption of a high amount of vitamin B12 is not advisable.

Some common symptoms that suggest deficiency of vitamin B12 are as follows:

  • The major problem is anemia which causes pale color, muscle fatigue, dizziness, and weakness.
  • If the deficiency is severe the Nerve cells are damaged and the patient feels a loss of reflexes, disturbing thoughts, and dementia. 
  • Low levels of vitamin B12 also cause difficulty in walking.
  • Oral clusters appear in the mouth which marks that there is nutritional deficiency.
  • For old age, people there are many issues like anxiety and dementia which may persist.

Oral Problems

One of the severe problems due to vitamin B12 deficiency is the presence of mouth ulcers. These mouth ulcers are all harmless but they suggest that you have a severe nutritional deficiency. They are generally yellow or red in color and appear on the inner side of the cheeks, corners of lips, gums and in the roof of the mouth. According to experts that can be four to six ulcers at one time. They are an indicator that severe anemia will appear. The patient may experience a red or sour tongue. 


As vitamin B12 is essential for the maturation of red blood cells, if it is not adequate then anemia will occur. It is characterized by abnormal red blood cell production or large cells production. It also leads to shortness of breath, muscle fatigue, dizziness, and increased heart rate. Those people might feel confused and irritated sometimes.

Physical Disorders 

Due to severe vitamin B12 deficiency, the reflexes become weak and the patient may grow psychologically weak. They might feel a tingling sensation in their hands and feet. Blurred vision may occur and short-term memory loss. They may feel difficulty in walking and vibrations in their legs. 

Diagnosis and Treatment

Common sources of vitamin B12 include meat and fish. For vegans, it is difficult to look for natural vitamin B12 sources. Lack of vitamin B12 is detected through blood tests and endoscopy. Supplements are a long-term treatment and in most cases. For extreme deficiency, injections are administered which deal with its lack. 

What are Its Causes and How to Avoid Them?

The first reason is less or no consumption of Vitamin B12. Other than that, the body may not absorb enough of it. If you are a vegan and do not take any vitamins it will definitely cause deficiency. Mothers who are vegans also cause a deficiency in their infants. There can be some issue in the small intestine due to which vitamin is not absorbed properly. Its prevention is done by taking an adequate amount of vitamins and diagnosing if any of these symptoms occur.
